seaport party

yesterday i went to an awesome free event:

block party

it was held at the south street seaport and had lots of fun things going on!
for those of you who live at EHS’s brooklyn heights location….the seaport is the really cool pier across the east river. it can be seen in the amazing view at the brooklyn heights promonade.

there was a dunk tank, tacos, diesel dollars (you could redeem for little prizes), vinyl, cds, tshirts, music, and amp energy drinks.
my favorite performances were of  CHELLY and MAJOR LAZER. the stage was great, people were great, beautiful weather, it was a blast!

i went by myself since no one else was free and it was kind of a spur of the moment adventure. in NYC its so fun to go out to events by yourself. you will meet people, it’s inevitable. and you usually met lots of cool cats.

i sometimes think you can soak in more when you are by yourself.
even if you are crowded by hundreds of other people on a pier listening to techno music and drinking amp energy drink.

foodie friday

have you had a street dog?
a dirty dog?
thats what i call the hot dogs you get from the cart at the corner

hot dog

i get my street dog with everything on it. ketchup, mustard(is the kinda spicy brown mustard), kraut, and that awesome onion sauce they have.

they are so cheap, and SO delicious!

if you’re not into getting meat from the street, try these places:

these are all around the city! gray’s papaya, papaya dog, papaya king, same places just different names.

i have still never been to this next place, but my mouth starts watering anytime i see it on food network or i even think about it!

crif dogs menu looks AMAZING. check out the website and look at the pictures, you’ll want to jump to the subway and head to this lower east side hot spot! check it out here

happy august

has the time flown by as fast as i think it has for you?
maybe it’s just me?
i feel like someone’s been pressing the fast forward button this whole summer!

this summer has been filled with a lot of work, fun, food, and friends!
although of course i wish there was more!
i got to see West Side Story, American Idiot, and La Cage Aux Folles!

my favorite summer memory has been MUSIC!
i have fully taken advantage of NYC’s music scene. most of the concerts i went to were free, and i think the most i paid for cover was $12. which is not much when you’re talking about seeing 4-16 different bands perform, AMAZING.

i’ve also been working on my music, as you saw in a recent post with my guitar ;-)
and i had my first ever live acoustic performance! it was my first time being amplified with my guitar.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN!
what is your favorite summer memory from these past few months?

foodie friday

my boss, pam kalmus, who’s the residence director at the marymount residence, got an email the other day from a friend.

in the email was the top EVERYTHING FOOD/DRINK related in nyc!
best french fries
best brunch
best happy hour
best roof deck
you name it!

here are some cool picks from the lists:

From Best Cheap Eats
Rebar – 147 Front St, Brooklyn – rebarnyc.com
Rebar’s “lunch break” is insane! You get a huge half-pound artisanal burger (or pulled pork, grilled cheese, etc.), fries or a salad and a bottomless fountain soda for $8.

From Best BBQ
Dinosaur Bar-B-Que – 646 W 131st St, NYC - dinosaurbarbque.com
This place is worth the trek. I mean I have never had such amazing BBQ ever! Their spice-rubbed wings are mouthwatering (you must order these if you go) and I also love their fried green tomatoes.

From Best Pizza by the Slice
Bleecker St Pizza – 69 7th Ave S, NYC – bleeckerstreetpizza.com
This is why New Yorkers say they have the best pizza in the country! The greatest pizza I have ever had! Love their sauce!

From Best Hot Dog
Asia Dog – at summer stage during the week and the Brooklyn Flea Market on Saturdays – asiadognyc.com
Hot dogs Asian-style! So different, yet so delicious! Try the Sidney – it’s a Thai-style dog with relish, mango, cucumber and crushed peanuts. So great!

HAPPY EATING!

don’t wanna be an american idiot

so you wanna see a broadway play?

do yourself a favor – SEE AMERICAN IDIOT!

EHS offered discount tickets to see this show last night. tickets were only $25 (trust me, you aren’t always lucky enough to get $25 tickets) what a deal!

fellow marymount RA samantha came out to the show also. after the show we were speechless and couldn’t stop humming along to “don’t wanna be an american idiot…etc. etc.”  after the show we were walking to the street level and we ended up behind the theatre in the stage entrance? so…we followed some old wheathered signs to get to the street and we stop again because there is a hallway with sharpies on a little ledge and you can sign the wall and take photos! we hung out there a bit but then we saw some of the performers walking out.

come to find out we’d be exiting through the stage door.

i look to the end of the hallway where there is a door open with a guard and a barracade holding back all the folks who wanted to swarm the cast. samantha and i contemplated walking out and signing autographs, but we decided not to trick everyone. i actually had headshots on me, i could have passed out signed photos of myself. UUBER self-promotion!

one day, there will be a gaggle of people waiting at a stage door for me.

i’ve also been getting a lot of emails about people who don’t know how to get broadway show discounts.
no fear, emily is here.
check out THIS website, great info about TKTS booths, student rush, and standing room tickets.

prepare for success

last night marymount hosted an event as part of EHS’s summer series “prepare for success”!

jobs, interviews, where!?

darren came to speak to EHS residents about finding the perfect job. did you know that only about 5% of jobs are actually advertised? darren talked about how to find the other 95% of jobs! by cold calling, networking, mass sending out your resume, and tips on how to create the perfect resume.

the “prepare for succes” series is almost over! here is the info for the rest of the events, be sure to stop by! they are all FREE and are great career builders.

i sometimes send my family postcards, just as a reminder i’m thinking of them. i bought a little booklet of NYC postcards that have photos of monuments, memorials, famous places, beautiful sunsets, y’know. i sent a round of postcards back home to my family recently and signed off each one saying

“home is where the heart is”

send your loved ones some postcards! it’ll brighten their day, and it always feels good to put a smile on someone’s face.

foodie friday

recognize this package?

are you living in a budget?
do you mooch off of other people’s food?
do you consciously only eat half a meal when you go out, just so you can have leftovers?

good for your wallet, ramen is CHEAP

bad for your body, ramen is HIGH in carbohydrates and in sodium

however

there is a way to eat ramen and not have a heart attack!
taking one package of ramen, mixing it with a bunch of stuff, makes it tastey and can bulk up that little pouch of noodles to last you 2 meals!

try this:

  1. cook the noodles as directed (i always put em in a bowl with just enough water to cover the noodles, cover it, and microwave for 3 minutes)
  2. i like to drain the noodles so there isn’t much water left over
  3. then i add only half a pouch of the seasoning mix – ONLY HALF!
  4. then i add things to make it seem gourmet and to make it healthier

here are my favorite things to add:

  • tomato sauce, parmesean cheese
  • diced onions, slivered peppers, italian dressing
  • corn, broccoli, diced onions, garbonzo beans (tastes great cold!)
  • mushrooms, canned zuchinni in tomato sauce
  • feta cheese, cut carrots, cut celery, little olive oil (taste great cold!)
