New York City has some awesome events every 4th of July. The Macy’s 4th of July fireworks are said to be the best around, so be sure to check them out! The fireworks take place along the hudson river between 25th and 50th streets and this year are going to be better then ever! The  Macy’s “Golden Mile” fireworks feature a shower of gold sparkling fireworks stretching over a mile across the hudson. This year the golden mile will also feature and additional mile-long shower of sparkling red and green.

The best place to view the works is on 12th ave between 23rd and 50th streets. Pedestrian viewing areas will be at the following streets: 24th, 26th through 30th, 34th, 40th through 44th, 47th, 49th through 52nd,54th, 56th, and57th.

Tom’s Shoes-One for One

Written on July 1, 2010 – 2:41 pm | by daniel

tomsIf you’ve taken a stroll along the streets of NYC you may have noticed the simple but trendy canvas like shoes that people are wearing. Everyone seems to have a pair and if you ask me they are a great summer style. They are called “TOMS” but what exactly is the story behind these simple shoes?

blake

This is Blake, founder of TOMS shoes ( I was suprised his name was Blake and not Tom, go figure.)

Blake’s mission when he started TOMS was simple, for each pair of shoes that sold another pair would be donated to a child in need. Most of TOMS donations go to poor countries overseas. Last month, TOMS donated over 7,000 pairs of shoes to children in Ethiopia alone. Now that is alot of shoes!

If you want to get in on this trend and know that your purchase is helping out a child in need, why not pick up a fresh pair of TOMS.  Check out their website where you can find the latest styles and retailers http://www.toms.com/

If you’re lucky enough to be spending your summer in NYC like I am you can head to any Whole Foods Market or a Nordstroms and pick up a pair- they are a steal at only $44.99.

Summer in the City

It can’t get any better than this!

It’s July 1st, so one month has passed of my first Summer in the City. Boy has it been great and so much has happened in such a short period of time. Back before the summer started, many moons ago in April, I became a Resident Advisor for EHS. Here you can see  my fellow RA’s and I tromping along in the subway and in the park during RA training!

Besides being an RA I am also studying over the summer; economics to be exact. My business major requires me to take a hefty course load during the year so I wanted to use some summer time to lighten my course load for the fall. I’ll be a junior this year at Marymount Manhattan College and I’m so excited to get my degree in business. What are my future plans you may be wondering? No worries, I have this figured out- Graduate school at NYU of course!

Working and studying hasn’t ruled my summer, I’ve had plenty of fun. A few weekends ago I traveled to Coney Island for the yearly Mermaid Parade with residents from my EHS building, 1760 3rd ave. It was a great time, and we all got to enjoy the beach afterward. In a few weeks I’ll be going kayaking on the Hudson river with some EHS friends. I’ve done it before and I’m super excited to go again, it’s a blast!

Stay tuned to see whats to come for the rest of my Summer in the City.
